Mdm Salmah’s Journey with Bethesda Care Services

Mdm Salmah’s Journey with Bethesda Care Services

“Whenever I needed someone, they were always there for me. That means so much to me.”

When Mdm Salmah first met the social workers from Bethesda Care Services (BCS), she did not expect that relationship to continue for many years.

Her son joined BCS’s Step-Up Programme in 2007, which supports and empowers primary school students. Through the programme, Mdm Salmah and her family were introduced to BCS.

Two years later, her husband passed away. Her son was just 11, and Mdm Salmah had to navigate life as a single parent while managing her family’s finances and caring for her son.

During this difficult period, BCS social worker Jeslyn supported Mdm Salmah with practical advice, including communicating with her son and managing her finances. She also made regular visits to check in on her.

For Mdm Salmah, these visits became more than just appointments. Jeslyn was someone she could talk to and rely on during a difficult time.

Even after Jeslyn left BCS, she continued to keep in touch with Mdm Salmah.

That relationship reflects an important part of BCS’s approach to social support. Beyond addressing immediate needs, our social workers build relationships that can continue to matter long after a particular programme or intervention ends.

Today, BCS continues to support Mdm Salmah through active ageing programmes and opportunities to stay engaged with the community. She joins outings, community lunches and activities where she can spend time with others.

For her, these opportunities provide something simple but important: people to meet, places to go and a community to be part of.

Be Part of Someone’s Journey

Through BCS’s active ageing programmes, volunteers can spend time with seniors, share a meal, accompany them on outings and take part in community activities.

Sometimes, volunteering is as simple as showing up and spending time with someone.
